The Civic Media Center will host a benefit event for injured writer, poet and activist Hugh "Ed" Suggs on Saturday, December 10th beginning at 8pm.
Ed Suggs is a longtime regular reader/performer at the CMC's Thursday Night Poetry Jam, and is a beloved and much respected member of the community of writers, poets, musicians and other artists who participate in the Jam and similar open mic and poetry related events in the Gainesville area.
On October 26th, Mr. Suggs, who was self-employed as a landscaper, was severely injured when a logging truck jumped a curb and hit him as he was working on a landscape maintenance job in Lake City with his son.
Poetry Jam poets and others have come together to put on this benefit performance to raise funds and show support and love for Ed and his family.
The performance will kick off with brief sets by a number of featured artists, including poets David Maas, Johnny Rocket, and Jimmy nil Fishhawk, and poet and singer/songwriter Michael Bobbitt, followed by an open mic period in which artists are invited to perform family-friendly material including poems, songs, spoken word and very short prose pieces.
Proceeds from this event will go to benefit Mr. Suggs and his family. Attendees are encouraged to contribute as generously as possible to help defray the mounting medical costs faced by the family as Ed continues on his long road of recovery.
